Chung Shan Medical and Dental College was established by Dr. Ju-Chuan Chou in 1960. The same year, the school admitted its first class of students and became Medical College. Later, it became Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU).

Oral Medicine Clinic

The Oral Medicine Clinic has been designated as a specialty training hospital for oral & maxillofacial surgery, oral & maxillofacial pathology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, operative dentistry and family dentistry. The Oral Medicine Clinic also offers training in periodontology, endodontics, and pedodontics plus combined trainings in perio-prosthetics, ortho-pedodontics, and perio-implantology.

Evolution in dental technologies follows the foundation of clinical dentistry, oral materials science. Technological advances include the transition of dental filling materials from metal alloy to composite resin and the progression of orthodontic metal materials from traditional stainless steel to Ni-Co alloy, which provides more comfort during orthodontic treatment. New materials used in periodontology, such as those for Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) provide enormous benefit in treating patients with periodontitis. In endodontics, the introduction of novel rotary equipment dramatically increases quality of treatment. More options in treating edentulous patients are available with the development and improvement of implant material. Finally, besides biocompatibility, which has always been essential in dental materials, oral esthetics has become an important aspect of dentistry.
